This Privacy Policy explains how sendmarshmallows.com (“Send Marshmallows,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects your information when you visit this site, sign up for updates, write a note, or send a bag of marshmallows.
Send Marshmallows is a campaign run alongside the book Marshmallows Are Their Favorite by Lindsay Oliver.
Information We Collect
Information You Provide: We collect your email address when you sign up for campaign updates. If you write a note, we collect the message you write, the display name you choose for the card, and whether you have given permission for your note to be shared publicly. If you send a bag of marshmallows, our payment and store provider collects the details needed to complete the transaction, such as your name, email address, billing address, and order information.
Automated Information: We collect basic, aggregate usage data to understand site traffic and improve the campaign — which pages are visited and where visitors arrive from. See Cookies and Analytics below.
How Information is Used
We use your information to:
- Send campaign updates, including letting you know when your marshmallows are on their way.
- Write your note onto a card and deliver it, together with the bags, to a National Primate Research Center as part of the campaign.
- Process and fulfill your order, and send order confirmations and related transactional messages.
- Respond to your questions.
- Measure site traffic in aggregate.
Note on Privacy: Your personal information is never sold, rented, or shared with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Your Note and Your Display Name
This is the one part of the campaign where something you write is deliberately shared, so it is worth setting out plainly.
The note and the display name you choose are sent to the research center. That is the point of the campaign — the note is printed on a card and delivered with the marshmallows. Please choose a display name you are comfortable having read by someone outside the campaign; “Anonymous” or a first name and initial are both fine.
Your contact details are never sent to the labs. Your email address, billing address, and order details stay with us and our providers.
Public sharing is opt-in. We will only publish your note and display name on this website, on social media, or in related campaign materials if you tick the box giving permission. If you do not, your note still goes to the lab, but we will not publish it.
If you change your mind, email hello@sendmarshmallows.com and we will remove your note from anything we publish. Once cards have been printed and delivered, we cannot recall them.
Payments
Payments are processed by a third-party store and payment provider. Your payment card details are entered directly with that provider and are never seen or stored by us. We receive only what is needed to confirm and fulfill your order.
Cookies and Analytics
Analytics on this site are cookieless. We use a privacy-friendly analytics service that measures traffic in aggregate — which pages are visited, and where visitors arrive from — without setting cookies, without following you across other websites, and without building a profile of you.
This site does not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies, and it does not store anything on your device. Services you are sent to from here, such as our checkout, run on their own platforms under their own privacy policies and may use cookies once you are on them.
Third-Party Services
We rely on a small number of trusted providers to run this campaign: a hosting platform, a form and email-delivery service for campaign updates, and an e-commerce and payment platform for orders. These providers process your data only to perform tasks on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy standards.
Third-Party Links
This site links to external websites, including lindsayoliver.com and our store. This Privacy Policy does not apply to those sites, and we are not responsible for their privacy practices.
International Data Transfers
This site is operated from the United States. If you access it from another region, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States, where our servers and providers are located, and data protection laws there may differ from those in your own country.
Data Retention
We keep your information only as long as needed to run the campaign, fulfill orders, comply with legal obligations such as tax and accounting requirements, and resolve any disputes. Campaign email subscribers are kept until they unsubscribe. Some transaction records may be retained after a deletion request where we are legally required to keep them.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect your data. No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your Rights and Choices
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, update, or delete the personal information we hold about you.
You can unsubscribe from campaign emails at any time using the link at the bottom of any email.
To exercise your data rights, contact hello@sendmarshmallows.com. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe and in accordance with applicable law.
If you are in the EEA or UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Children’s Privacy
This site is not intended for or directed to children under the age of 13 (or the minimum age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal and regulatory reasons. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date.
